District Cup match report from L2 Captain Katherine Strachan

Saturday the 5th of May the ladies 2s represented the Club in the District Cup finals. This was a bit of a step up for the team who had competed in the plate finals only the previous season. Confidence was high after winning the East District 1st Division and beating both the northern and midlands league champions en route to the cup finals. The team took to the show pitch at Peffermill with a mixture of excitement and apprehension, but encouraged by the troop of ESM supporters. Orkney had also brought a good crowd and it was great to hear the banter in the stands.

The match started off with a bit of a wobble as Orkney piled on the pressure and won a couple of short corners in quick succession. However, the ESM defence held out. Throughout the first half both teams struggled to retain possession with battles being won by both sides mainly in the middle of the pitch. The half time score stood at 0-0.

In the second half ESM came out strong and managed to retain possession, stringing together series after series of quality passes. ESM started to make some head way and 15 minutes into the second half the deadlock was broken with a goal from Jo Pentland.

Orkney came back strong clearly determined not to make the long journey home without the cup. They too managed to break the ESM defence ten minutes later from a well struck penalty corner.

With nothing separating the teams, it appeared to be heading for flicks. However, with less than 2 minutes to go, Alison ‘Muffie’ Hogg took a fantastic shot from the top of the D which screamed passed the Orkney keeper into the back corner of the goal.

Final score 2-1 win to ESM!

Thank you to all who came down to support the L2 on Saturday and all who sent good luck messages, it was an amazing experience shared with everyone.

Friday round up from the Club Captain

Last Saturday saw the L2 take on Aberdeen Ladies in the District Cup Semi finals. The last time the L2 met Aberdeen Ladies was last year in the District Plate Final where they lost on penalties. I’m happy to report that they went, they saw and they conquered. With a 3.1 win the L2 have secured a spot in the Scottish District Cup Finals against Orkney this Saturday. If you are looking for something to cheer on please come down to Peffers and show your support.

This is the last match of the season!

Friday round up from the Club Captain

Hello all!!

Last Saturday saw the Club’s biggest ever end of season dinner, at 107 people we were just under the maximum capacity. I hope you are all recovered, it was a fantastic evening filled with food, fines, frolics and a lot of awards. Even the SMC and MES FP’s were joining in on the fines! A big thank you has to go out to Katie and Jurgen for organising a fantastic evening, we’ll be talking about this well into the summer. Also a special thanks has to be extended to Denise and her team and Joyce and her team for the super hospitality.

Not much hockey this weekend apart from the L2 taking on Aberdeen Ladies in the District Cup Semi finals. Last time the L2 met this oppostion was last year in the District Plate Final. If any of you are in Aberdeen, please pop down and cheer the L2 on.
